SEO Basics
What Is SEO?
SEO stands for search engine optimisation, which is the practise of increasing traffic to a website, via natural search. ‘Natural’ search refers to unpaid results returned organically via engines such as Google, after a user has entered a search term.
SEO will often target several different kinds of search, including local search, image search, video and multimedia search, generic search engines and industry focused vertical search engines.
How Is SEO Different From SEM?
SEM stands for search engine marketing, and is essentially the same thing, the only real difference is that SEM is considered to be the correct term for optimisation that includes paid search through the use of Google AdWords, Yahoo! AdSense, etc.
The SEO Process
The SEO process is focused on how the most popular search engines work (how their algorithms return and filter results) and what people are searching for. The phrases people use to search for the things they’re looking for are known as keywords or keyphrases (also sometimes referred to as keyterms).
Keyword research is the initial stage in search engine optimisation, and focuses on highlighting keyterms that have a high search volume of relevant traffic with as little competition as possible. Keywords would then be selected to target for these search terms, with the overall aim being to rank on the first page of Google (most commonly, Bing and Yahoo! are also relevant). Most SEO companies would begin with a list of 10 keyword targets, with some also selecting secondary and even tertiary keyphrases.
The next phase of the SEO process is generally referred to as ‘on-site’ optimisation, whereby the website is optimised for search engines. This would usually consist of editing the site content to increase keyword density in the site copy, organising site navigation and architecture and editing HTML, CSS and all associated coding. This is done with two primary aims in mind; to increase relevancy to targeted keywords and to remove any possible barrier to search engine indexing activity. An internal-linking strategy would also normally be adopted, in order to share incoming link power throughout the site and clarify navigation, particularly for Google’s crawler bots.
The other main activities in the SEO process are collectively known as ‘off-site’ optimisation. This generally consists of various forms of link building, which is the practise of increasing the amount of quality inbound links to a website. Google’s algorithm puts a large emphasis on quality, relevance and number of inbound links, which is why they are a primary focus for SEO engineers.
Why Should You Consider SEO?
SEO has become an extremely important area and one that millions of business worldwide are beginning to take advantage of. It can be extremely lucrative to invest in SEO and companies operating in competitive industries such as finance, law, e-commerce, etc. can make a phenomenal return on investment by appearing on the first page of Google for certain keywords.
Here are some pertinent statistics to help demonstrate the importance of good SEO:
- 91% of all people using the internet will find what they’re looking for through search engines
- 87% of users searching on Google click on the number one result
- Only a tiny fraction of users will go to page 2 or beyond on Google searches, they will either select a first page result or refine their search query
- 95% of non-branded natural clicks come from page 1
- Over 250 million searches are carried out daily in the UK
- 73% of all online transactions start with a query on a search engine
- Internet marketing and advertising spend has now overtaken that of television, the first media in history to do so
If your target market can’t find your website, then it’s usefulness is hugely diminished. If you’re using your website to make money for your business, you can’t afford to ignore SEO.
