Authorised Forms of Execution [Infographic]


Living in the UK, it’s still reasonably surprising to me that some countries still use execution as a form of criminal punishment, as capital punishment hasn’t existed in the UK since 1969. Looking into the Amnesty International statistics on global executions, I was shocked to discover just how many countries are still using capital punishment, and even more surprised at some of the authorised forms of execution around the world.

The infographic below shows the different forms of executions used globally, visualising the number of countries to authorise each method. I’ve also included the number of countries that have executed people since 1995 (which encouragingly has been dropping fairly consistently):
