‘Google Me’ To Rival Facebook?
A few characters from a Twitter post sparked massive debate on Saturay night:
This post comes from Kevin Rose, founder of Digg.com, and has since been removed. This has, of course, done nothing to quell the rumours.
Further confirmation came in the form of ex-Facebook head Adam D’Angelo, who said:
‘Here is what I’ve pieced together from some reliable sources: This is not a rumor. This is a real project. There are a large number of people working on it. I am completely confident about this. They realized that Buzz wasn’t enough and that they need to build out a full, first-class social network. They are modeling it off of Facebook. Unlike previous attempts (before Buzz at least), this is a high-priority project within Google.
They had assumed that Facebook’s growth would slow as it grew, and that Facebook wouldn’t be able to have too much leverage over them, but then it just didn’t stop, and now they are really scared.”
Experts think Google may integrate its existing social networking features, Google Buzz and Orkut, while others are pointing to a possible upgrade to Google Profiles. However, with the huge privacy concerns erupting after the launch of Google Buzz, it will need to be well re-modelled.
As yet there has been no comment from Google themselves. I would think a press release will come soon, but for now i’m sure they’re happy to let rumours fly. It will be interesting to see what they end up with, whether it will be a fully fledged social media site, an update or upgrade to a current service or something else…
